I thought the end of this book was odd. There wasn't really any closure about what happened to Bernard or Helmholtz besides them going to an island and we never find out what happens to the society. We can only assume they continue living in the system of castes and happiness. I don't believe that the world we live in could ever turn into that society mainly because of religion. In the book the Ford said they didn't need a religion because they didn't have any problems or sadness that would make them seek out hope and a faith, but I think that in today's society religion is an important part of peoples lives no matter how much faith they have because our morals are built off of whatever faith we do have. So because of peoples need to have a higher hope or faith in something I believe that peoples morals would prevent them from ever creating a society like that in Brave New World.
In chapters 14 and 15 I was able to see how the different people react to death. John wanted to save Linda and mourned her death whereas the people of the World State accepted the death and moved on with their lives as if nothing had happened. They had no relationships with other people because everyone belongs to everyone so the death and sickness of others don't effect the people in this society. I thought it was weird that the kids went to "death conditioning" and then received chocolate éclairs when someone passed away. This society is odd because there are no relationships between people and John saw this when he was at the hospital with Linda. He didn't like how the people had no care or concern with Linda while she was dying and he thought hat they were disrespectful
In these chapters the plot of the story is changing and problems are coming about for all of the major characters. Bernard is no longer popular because John refused to go to the party. Lenina and John do not have any relationship between them because John found out that she is not pure as he thought she was. And something happened to Linda. In the end of the chapter John leaves his apartment quickly to go see Linda, but what happened to her is unknown. I think that the climax of the story is coming soon and may happen because of the death of Linda.
In chapters 9-11 Bernard and Lenina brought Linda and John back to London with them and I saw how they were accepted into the "perfect" society of the new world. The D.H.C. retired right after he saw Linda and John when he found out that John was his son. The people were horrified by Linda because of her old age and she was overweight, but their reaction to John was different. They were all interested in the "savage" and tried to meet him and because of Johns popularity Bernard and Lenina became more popular as well. Bernard is popular now among the people, but I think that something is going to happen soon to Bernard because of the way he is currently acting. I also believe that something is going to happen between Lenina and John when he finds out that she is not pure as he has assumed because his knowledge of relationships comes from reading Shakespeare.
In chapter 8 we learned about Johns life on the reservation and the differences between people on the reservation and people in the new world. Johns mother, Linda, lived in the new world so John was raised differently than the other kids on the reservation. John was taught how to read and because his mother was different than other woman on the reservation, and because John himself was different than the other kids, he was not allowed to participate in any games or activities with the tribal children. John was a unique individual on the reservation and because of this him and Bernard easily relate to one another and tend to feel alone in their community. I think the relationship between Bernard and John will grow when they go to the new world because of this connection.
In this chapter a comparison can be drawn between Lenina and Linda, the D.H.C.’s old girlfriend that was left on the reservation in New Mexico. Linda was left there after she hit her head while hiking and lost her memory. She is similar to Lenina because they both love the society that they live in, or lived in, and they believe that it is more civilized and 'normal' than the reservation. They don’t understand the connections between people to make a family because they have been trained to think that stability comes from everyone belonging to everyone. Bernard’s character is different though. He looks at the families and the connection between a mother and her child and thinks that the people living in his society are missing out on something. This chapter gave insight about the differences between the reservation and the rest of the world and I think that Bernard might try to stay on the reservation so that he doesn’t have to return to his world and be sent to Iceland.
In chapter 6 the author emphasized how different Bernard is compared to other people in the society. Instead of wanting to go somewhere that was full of people and entertainment for his date with Lenina, he wanted to go somewhere quiet so they could talk. He also points out when Lenina says something that was programmed into her mind when she was young. He is different than the rest of the people in his community and because people are starting to notice his differences he is going to be sent to Iceland when he returns from New Mexico. This book is odd because instead of wanting to be a unique person, everyone wants to fit in and be the same as the rest of the people in the community because they want to live in a stable and civilized environment.
In chapters 4 and 5 in Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley, the plot of the story began to unfold. The two main characters, Lenina Crowne and Bernard Marx, were revealed and the differences between them and the other characters are described. Unlike the other people, Lenina has only been with Henry Foster for the past fourth months and doesn’t think there is anything wrong with that. She thinks differently than the other women and of all of the men in the community she chooses to go on a date with Bernard. Bernard is also an Alpha, but he is shorter than the rest and much smarter. Even though he goes through all of the same actions as the rest of the people, he doesn’t seem to fit. After being introduced to these characters, as well as Helmholtz Watson who is also much smarter like Bernard, I believe the author is setting up for a rebellion or revolt to the system of the Fords by the people in the community who are different and see the flaws within the completely ‘happy’ society they live in. My prediction is that when Bernard and Lenina go to New Mexico the ideas about a change in their society will come about and eventually they will attempt to change the world they live in.
A Brave New World is an interesting story where everyone has a specific identity and position within the community in order to maintain stability in the world. In the first three chapters of this book the author brings the reader through the story to explain how the community works as the Director of Hatcheries and Conditioning (D.H.C.) brings the future employees through the Central London Hatchery and Conditioning Centre. Through cloning, putting the infants through different situations, such as being shocked while looking at books and flowers, and many other things the people go through, the citizens of this community are separated into different castes so that each person within the community has a certain position and identity to help maintain a stable world. In this world there are ultimately no emotions besides happiness and the Ford, Mustapha Mond, supports this system of living by presenting the biased view of the history of the world, such as wars, but with the new society there is only happiness so no fighting or arguing occurs and hurts people. This story has an interesting concept because it is a life of complete pleasure for the people and no disappointment or sadness to deal with, but I predict that in the coming chapters the characters Lenina Crowne and Bernard Marx will meet and somehow bring change to the community they live in.
